چکیده

The effects of temperature on the results obtained in the older serological tests for syphilis employing lipoidal antigens is well known. In fact, the differences in test results obtained when certain tests were performed at different temperatures served not only as the basis for attempted differentiation of syphilitic from so-called biologic false positive reactions (Kahn, 1940), but also for determining the relative specificity of different lots of lipoidal antigens (Kline and Suessenguth, 1946). Other workers have shown that test sensitivity is affected not only by the temperature at which the antigen-saline emulsions are prepared (Cannefax and others, 1953) but also by the temperature of the glassware and reagents (Fugazzotto, 1953). Exposure of blood or serum samples to temperatures above those employed for refrigeration increases the rate of haemolysis on the one hand and depresses the serological titre on the other, in proportion to the duration of exposure and the elevation of temperature. Most of the widely used serological tests for syphilis, with the exception of those performed at 4 to 60 C. or 370 C., are carried out at so-called " room temperature ", but this term becomes meaningless when the wide seasonal variations in laboratory temperatures which occur nationally and internationally are considered. In order to show the effect of these temperature

Novel Treponema pallidum serologic tests: a paradigm shift in syphilis screening for the 21st century.

The mainstay of diagnosis for Treponema pallidum infections is based on nontreponemal and treponemal serologic tests. Many new diagnostic methods for syphilis have been developed, using specific treponemal antigens and novel formats, including rapid point-of-care tests, enzyme immunoassays, and chemiluminescence assays. Although most of these newer tests are not yet cleared for use in the Unite...

Canadian Public Health Laboratory Network laboratory guidelines for congenital syphilis and syphilis screening in pregnant women in Canada

Despite universal access to screening for syphilis in all pregnant women in Canada, cases of congenital syphilis have been reported in recent years in areas experiencing a resurgence of infectious syphilis in heterosexual partnerships. Antenatal screening in the first trimester continues to be important and should be repeated at 28 to 32 weeks and again at delivery in women at high risk of acqu...

Form II HRP Research Proposal: Project details Utility evaluation of Point-of-Care Tests in Non-Clinical Settings for the Screening of HIV and Syphilis in Men Who Have Sex with Men 1. Project summary

Serologic tests are the diagnostic tests of choice for HIV and syphilis. There are two types of serological tests (treponemal and non-treponemal tests) for laboratory diagnosis of syphilis. Traditionally, one non-treponemal assay is used for screening and a treponemal assay is used for confirmation for syphilis. For diagnosis of HIV EIAs are used for screening and Western blot for confirmation ...

A clinico-serologic study of leprosy. I. Results of serologic tests for syphilis, including the Treponema pallidum immobilization test.

For many years it has been known that leprosy patients are prone to give positive reactions in the serologic tests for syphil is (STS) in common use. Badger (1) reviewed the literature on the subject up to 193 1. Since that time, several other studies have been made (2-5, 10, 12, 13, 15). almost all of them showing that reactions occur frequenty in STS's in the sera of patients with leprosy. so...
